Walking Tennis isn’t only for those who are injured or whose tennis career is winding down.
Anyone who has popped into the Hive Leisure Centre on a Tuesday between 2-3pm knows that the reality is very different.
BUT… unless you try it out, it’s hard to understand that as well as offering tennis at a gentler pace, we also offer highly competitive games. Both of which are actually rather good fun!
We have set out to change how Walking Tennis is perceived, as well as giving our players a new challenge. Introducing our new mini league!
We welcomed Needingworth Tennis Club to the Hive Lesiure Centre for our very first competitive match.
Needingworth play on standard courts and have slightly different rules, so they mixed in to start with, gamely tackling the balloon ball volley warm up, and adapting quickly to the smaller courts, the red balls, and our tie break scoring. Sadly, they adapted rather too quickly as they came out the winners against Ely Walking Tennis Titans - hereafter known as the Titans! - 3-1.
The usual tea and lots of cake followed and Needingworth have already booked in the Titans for an away match in the summer. In the meantime we have two more matches booked in with different Cambridgeshire clubs and looking forward to a packed summer of league matches.
As always everyone is included in whatever we do - tennis is an incredibly adaptive game and we are always looking to ways to make it more fun for everyone - whatever challenges they may have.
Walking Tennis is held every Tuesday at The Hive Leisure Centre in Ely from 2-3pm with tea and cake to follow for the next half hour or whenever they stop talking!
