Diversity Tennis puts on a diversity tennis day at Ely Tennis Club
Designed to showcase the work Emma and Fiona have done in opening up tennis to parts of the community that had felt unrepresented, and to give people a chance to see what was on offer at the club, Diversity Day was supported by Ability Plus and Living Sport.
Walking Tennis; VI tennis; SEND sessions – for children and their families – were all on offer and the day was both well received and well supported – including the Cambs LTA Inclusivity Committee representative Steve Shaw.
Emma and Fiona have been working with VI students as part of their long term commitment to our local special school – Highfields Academy Ely and were keen to demonstrate some of techniques they had invented (it is more usual to have VI tennis indoors – rather than on an outdoor court with 10 other students noisily playing tennis in the neigbouring courts!). Blindfolds were made ready!
It was good to see how families could successfully play together with some help, whilst very competitive games of walking tennis were being played on another court.
Refreshments were available all day in the clubhouse – and were very welcome after a vigorous game!
